"I don't know if I'll have the time to commit to this..."
"I don't think I'm good enough to be in a group like this..."
"I don't have an instrument to play anymore..."
We've heard them all. And we're here to tell you we still want you to join one of our ensembles.
Our philosophy at HV CAMP is to provide the members of our community with an opportunity to play music. Yes, we do have some basic requirements to join (like being old enough, knowing how to play an instrument, being able to read music, etc.), but questions about time commitments, personal ability, self-doubt, or lack of access to an instrument shouldn't be hurdles that prevent you from joining one of our groups (or even suggesting we start a new group).
When it comes to the time commitment, we want you to know we understand that people have families, jobs, and lives. That's why we only require members to make at least half or a majority of our rehearsals. If you have a business trip or can't get someone to watch your kids, we get it! In fact, if you need to bring your kids to rehearsal, that's fine too! (Just make sure they're quiet and entertained!)
Our musical directors try to select music that fits the level of the musicians. Music is not selected to provide an insurmountable challenge. In fact, most of the hurdles that prevent musicians from finding success with the musical selections exist within the mind of the musicians ("I'll never be able to get this...I'm just not good enough..."). Additional help (such as our educational programs) can also be provided to assist with any challenges that may remain.
Finally, we do have instruments to rent if you need one. In fact, some of our members help other members with things like amplifiers, auxiliary percussion, etc. We truly do believe that the communal spirit brought about by the individuals who join us help cultivate our success.
If you have any of these fears, worries, doubts, or anxieties about being in one or more of our groups, please rest assured that our goal is not to exclude you.
By contrast, the people who do not succeed in our groups (and tend to leave) exhibit one or more of the following:
-They have no sense of humor and cannot balance the effort required to make music with the joy that comes with being in our groups.
-They complain about anything and everything.
-They lack teamwork and care more about themselves.
-They don't trust the musical directors and are insubordinate as a result.
-They refuse to eliminate (or cannot understand) mental mistakes that are avoidable with the use of common sense and social awareness.
-They are ignorant to these items and lack the capacity to understand why they are important to us.
The fact of the matter is that the tenured members of our groups keep coming back because of the intrinsic joy created by being part of our team. If you want to feel that joy with us, then you should be part of our team.
