Want to join us? Great! However, read this first!
Are you interested in joining one of our ensembles? We would love to have you! But, you need to read this information first and understand what it takes to join.
HV CAMP prides itself in overseeing community ensembles, meaning we welcome all eligible musicians to join. You can be professional or amateur, young or old, teacher or student, etc. Many of our members who are not professional musicians appreciate the chance to work alongside those who are professional; similarly, those who are professional appreciate the opportunity to cultivate the musical community and grow their networking opportunities. It is truly a unique opportunity that cannot be found anywhere else.
However, we have no tolerance for egos. Musicians who do not encompass a humble demeanor regarding their skill level or who boast about their ability or accomplishments will not fit in with our groups. Our goal in every ensemble is to come together, work as a team, and rehearse/perform music with a professional demeanor, even if we are not a professional ensemble. If you care more about which chair you play than the overall success of the group, our ensembles are not for you.
Our musical directors are professional musicians who are competently trained and well-respected. They equally value the good sportsmanship and fairness of communal opportunities as well as the desire to execute a fantastic show. They run rehearsals and manage groups with laughter, lightheartedness, and a desire to see continual improvement from every musician. Instead of musical perfection, they demand musical excellence, defined as the heart each person needs to care about giving it "your all." Members can trust that the directors have everyone's best interests in mind.
Here are some examples of things we do not tolerate:
If you're okay with all of this, then you're perfect for our groups!
Here's how you join:
First, you need to be able to play an instrument! This means you have been playing for at least one continuous year and competently know how to make music. Our requirements/guidelines page spells out the musical requirements we expect from each member; be sure to read them carefully. Don't pretend you know these things when you don't! If you haven't picked up your instrument for some time and want to do so by joining one of our groups, that's fine! That means you played earlier in life, and that meets our requirement. Our ensembles exist for purposes like that. You also need to be at least 15 years old. (People younger than 15 years old must traditionally audition.)
Second, all new members to any group must complete a seating audition and a theory survey. This allows us to know which part each new member should play while also allowing us to select music that the members can handle. We want to make sure we cater to the members and provide them with every opportunity to both succeed and improve simultaneously. Click on the "schedule an audition" page to sign up for one!
Please note: this is not an audition process to enter! If you meet our requirements and guidelines, you're in! We simply want to make sure that we place you in the spot where you can best succeed. (Musicians younger than 15 years old are subject to an audition process to enter.)

Here are some examples of things we do not tolerate:
- Extraneous conversation when the musical director is trying to speak to the ensemble.
- Extraneous playing of instruments when the musical director stops the ensemble.
- Members making suggestions or decisions reserved for the musical director.
- Members "fooling around" by touching equipment or instruments that are not their property.
- Members who do not adhere to the music (i.e. playing their own ideas instead of what's on the page).
- Members who lie about their history or ability to play music in order to join an ensemble.
