To launch NJMI in Fall 2026 via the NJMI Pilot Program, only Music Theory I will be offered. Music Theory II will be offered in Spring 2027. This allows NJMI to gauge interest and collect analytical data to determine how to properly roll out the full complement of courses.
Music Theory I
A traditional “101” course, this course explores how music is both conceived and perceived by understanding basic rudiments such as notation, rhythm, pitch, and harmony. Students will learn to construct major and minor scales as well as intervals. The curriculum also introduces topics such as voice-leading, diatonic harmony, and transposition, providing students with the practical and analytical tools to dissect musical scores and write foundational progressions.
Music Theory II
A continuation of the practical foundations established, this course expands on the importance of voice-leading and diatonic harmony. Students begin to compose and analyze music with the addition of topics such as triads, inverted chords, cadences, seventh chords, and non-chord tones. Successful completion of this course properly prepares students to not only interpret standard musical literature and write sophisticated four-part harmony but also to join community and professional ensembles with the practical knowledge to excel in many facets.
