Summer Master Classes

During the Summer season, HV CAMP offers a Master Class (or Classes) when our schedule of ensembles changes.  The program runs over a few weeks, usually one night per week.  Topics are usually selected based on desire from members of our ensembles, but anyone is welcome to register and attend our classes.

Students who sign up for a Master Class must understand that the relationship between clinicians and students is different than settings in ensembles or individual private lessons.  As a group of students will be learning concurrently with no examination or final grade, instruction may not be as direct or specific to each student as it may be in other settings.  The pace of these classes will be steady and cannot slow down for individual students.

To sign up, click "Register" under "How To Join" and select the Summer Master Classes.  (If multiple Master Classes are being offered, select the appropriate class.)

For 2025, HV CAMP is proud to offer:
  • PRACTICAL MUSIC THEORY (Mondays 6pm-7:30pm with Sean Ryan)

The class will run for five weeks and costs $175 per person per class.

Here is the curriculum for the class:

Class 1 (July 7)
A comprehensive exam will be given to demonstrate skills on scales, intervals, chords, and rhythm.  This will provide each student with an assessment of where strength and weaknesses currently lie, allowing the student to gauge where practical improvement can be made.  The clinician will review each exam prior to the next class and provide each student with a report on the subjects prior to the next class.

Class 2 (July 14)--Scales
By strengthening the understanding of how to construct scales both visually and aurally (and then how to play them on an instrument), students will learn how to eliminate dumb mistakes such as playing the wrong notes as well as recognizing tonal centers that will assist in providing the framework for music students are trying to learn.  The main objectives will be major and natural minor scales, followed by harmonic minor scales, then melodic minor scales.  If time permits and skill level fits, additional scales can be added, such as modal, pentatonic, and blues.

Class 3 (July 21)--Intervals
By strengthening the understanding of hearing and recognizing intervals, students will open up an easier path to playing melodies, especially on brass and string instruments where it's not as simple to just "push buttons to play notes."  It may also assist with the creation of melody during improvisation.  Intervals will be no greater than an octave for the purpose of study.

Class 4 (July 28)--Chords
By strengthening the understanding of how to recognize, hear, and construct various chords, students add to the foundation of scales and intervals and tie it together with more work on the tonal center.  It will also assist with recognizing when tonal centers shift or change, allowing modulations to be recognized.  Minor aspects of functional tonality may be included pending skill levels.  Triads will be the main focus due to potential time constraints.

Class 5 (August 4)--Rhythm
Perhaps the most important part of the entire class, visually recognizing and reading rhythms (as well as hearing them) could be the most applicable to members of the community who are seeking to strengthen their musical skills.  The mathematical side of interpreting and performing rhythms will be highlighted, specifically focusing on elements like time signature, tempo, and feel to assist with the process.
